Notebook 4
I didnât end up singing to Taylora on her birthday, mostly because that was the day I woke up . She said it was the best present I could have given her. So, I kind of wanted to be able to tell her it was intentional, but we both knew it wasnât. In total I was in the hospital for just over a month. About three weeks when I was really sick, then the last few days just so they could monitor me and make sure I was well enough to go home. The following few months at home were⦠weird. Baz pretty much did everything he could to stay out of my way. Even avoiding being in the house when it would have been just the two of us. There was also an underlying tension between him and Mum, something I couldnât quite put my finger on. And I felt like my family and friends were all walking on eggshells around me. I think thatâs why I became so certain of what ward Iâd been placed onto.
It was late September before things started to feel like normal again. I guess everyone just needed me to prove Iâd really recovered before they could just move on. I hate how much I must have scared them, but I donât really remember it like they do, and even if I did, it wasnât like it was my fault. Anyway, things had started to settle back down to normal again, and Taylora had come over for the monthly roast. She was lounging next to me on the couch, whilst my sister was on the floor reading, Mum was in the kitchen making dinner, and Baz was in the room just off the kitchen he used like a shed, working on something for one of the neighbours. Or at least, thatâs where Iâd thought he was.
âYou know, I still havenât heard you sing Jay,â Taylora made a noise somewhere between contentment and wishful thinking. âYou said you would for my birthday, but then you⦠got sick.â
âThat wasnât exactly my fault you know,â I half closed my eyes, hoping if I acted casual about it, she wouldnât suddenly go back to being awkward. ââSides which, what I did for you instead was get better, singing would have just been weird and awkward after that.â
âYeah, I know,â I was grateful for the light tones in her voice, âbut I still want to hear you sing.â
âGood luck with that,â Roxanna laughed without even looking up from her book. âSinging is something he only does when the house is empty. Iâll sometimes catch him if I come home early from somewhere. But heâll always go quiet when he sees me and then refuses tuh even hum a note.â
âFrom what youâve heard, is he any good?â
âNever recognise anything he sings,â she shrugged, ânever hear enough of a song tuh know.â
âI want to hear you sing Jay,â Taylora turned back towards me.
âNot now,â I shook my head.
âAww,â she moaned, âno fair.
